How to clone hard drives with free software?

Whether you’re replacing an older disk with a new, larger model or a faster SSD, or you’re replacing an old disk that’s about to give up its soul, the crucial question is: how will the data get from the old disk to the new one? In Windows 10, there is no feature that supports the cloning of individual partitions or entire media. In such cases, you can use the free software Macrium Reflect Free Edition (macrium.com/reflectfree).

Once you have the target disk inserted in your computer or connected it to your computer with a USB cable or adapter, install the application and launch it. Once started, the program will give you a list of all the hard disks in your computer and information about the partitions.

If the target disk is smaller than the original, we will need to resize the partitions before the process. You can do this using programs such as Gparted (https://gparted.org/) or Easus Partition Manager Free. And if the target disk is larger, you can easily use Windows’ own disk manager after cloning to enlarge the partitions containing your data to fit more space.
