How to fix the update error?

Occasionally, Windows 10 fails to install updates and instead displays a not very informative error message and an error code such as “0x80060449”. One solution to this problem is to manually stop the update service.

Open the command prompt with administrator rights, type net stop wuauserv, and press enter to stop the Windows Update service.

Then delete the contents of the C:\Windows\Temp and C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution directories. Open the Run window with Windows+R. Enter the path %UserProfile%\App-Data\Local\Temp and delete all content from this directory as well.

Switch back to the command line and start the service again with net start wuauserv. After restarting, Windows updates can usually be installed.
