AMD expands towards ARM chips

Now that the company is starting to regain its strength in the PC processor market, it is trying its hand in a new area: ARM chips!

AMD is currently synonymous for users with desktop processors and high-quality video cards, but the company is a consumer product manufacturer and a custom manufacturer. The US manufacturer also produces semi-custom processors for Sony and Microsoft, the former for the PlayStation line and Xboxes.

According to AMD CFO Devinder Kumar, the time has come to broaden the portfolio a bit, and at the same time, it is worth mentioning that ARM has been working for some time to make its products the best alternative not only for mobile devices. One example is the joint project between ARM and Microsoft, Windows on ARM, which involves not only Windows 10 but also Windows 11. ARM’s secret ambition is to become a player in the server market.

But to return to AMD, the relationship between the company and ARM has long been a good one, but it has not been very fruitful so far. AMD did produce an ARM-based processor five years ago, in 2016. Still, the A1100, part of the Opteron family, was delayed, and by the time it was available, all potential partners had lost interest. Now the situation may change, but it all depends on market demand.
